Matthew George of Stockyard Hill was tragically killed in a car accident in November 2007, at 21 years of age.
Matthew, a passionate and respected Angus cattle breeder was known and respected nationally and was considered a leading expert in his field. Matthew’s dream was to travel to Canada to study developments in Angus Breeding and to bring this knowledge back to Australia to develop local breeds and to share his knowledge with
fellow breeders.
The Matthew George Young Stockman Award was established through The Ballarat Foundation to allow other young breeders, aged 18 to 25 years, the opportunity to live Matthew’s dream. The Matthew George Young Stockman Award will send one deserving young stockman to Canada each year to study breeding programs and developments.
Matthew’s family, friends and colleagues organised a fundraiser dinner and auction in conjunction with the Royal Melbourne Show in September raising a staggering figure, almost topping $90,000.
Today, David and Lorraine George presented a cheque to The Ballarat Foundation CEO Noel Trengove for the Matthew George Young Stockman Award Fund.

Further, CEO Noel Trengove will announce the establishment of a Regional Donation Account established through the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) that
will allow individuals and business to further contribute to this fund by way of tax deductible donations.
“Through the establishment of the Regional Donation Account with FRRR, we are able to utilise their special status to provide tax deductions for donations to this fund”, said The Ballarat Foundation CEO, Noel Trengove “Anyone from anywhere in Australia wishing to support this initiative could now make a donation and receive a tax deduction for it.”
