regional environmental sub-fund

  • about
regional environmental sub-fund

The principal purpose of the sub-fund is to build a capital fund base which will, into perpetuity, support the protection, sustainability and enhancement of the natural environment or a significant aspect of the natural environment within the defined region; and, the provision of information or education, or the carrying on of research, about the natural environment or a significant aspect of the natural environment.

The natural environment and concern for it would include:

  • Developing a culture of sustainability
  • Restoring, maintaining and enhancing natural assets
  • Reducing our resource consumption and everyday impacts

For example: Addressing significant aspects of natural environment such as rainforests; wildlife and their habitats; issues affecting the environment such as air and water quality, waste minimisation, soil conservation, and biodiversity; and promotion of ecologically sustainable development principles.

The natural environment would exclude, for example:

  • constructions such as the retaining walls of dams;
  • cultivated parks and gardens;
  • Australian native zoos and wildlife parks (except those parks and zoos principally carried on for the purposes of species preservation); and
  • cultural sites and heritage properties.

The defined region is the geographic area defined as being within the regional boundaries of The Ballarat Foundation. In general terms this covers the local government areas of the Ararat Rural Shire, the Pyrenees Shire, the Hepburn Shire, the Moorabool Shire, the City of Ballarat and the western half of the Golden Plains Shire. However, The Ballarat Foundation recognises that these boundaries are not entirely definitive and that spillage would be expected with grants particularly as they are applied to projects which relate to activities such as forestation and waterways relating to a particular forest or stream. It also acknowledges that work undertaken outside these general boundaries (Ie: upstream) may be required to provide a benefit with the region (Ie: downstream).

If you would like more information or if you are interested in donating money or property to this fund please contact the CEO in confidence to discuss your wishes.
