Ballarat Women’s Fund members and supporters were privileged to hear from Patty Kinnersly, CEO of Our Watch, the nation’s leading organisation working to end violence against women and children. The event held at the Hydrant Food Hall on Thursday 21st August was a valuable and insightful evening, as well as providing an opportunity for members to network.
Interviewed by Rochelle Kirkham, Patty spoke about her work addressing gendered violence and the mission of Our Watch to prevent violence against women and children.
Patty began by discussing root causes of violence against women, such as gender inequality and societal disrespect towards women. She highlighted the unique history of public health initiatives in Victoria, that helped reframe violence as a health issue, leading to a national plan for prevention. Patty emphasizes the importance of creating tools for workplaces and the community to engage in conversations about gender equality, and the critical role of government in driving systemic change.
She shared her passion for her work, acknowledging the challenges of balancing hope with the ongoing reality of violence. Patty also discussed the "saturation model," a new initiative focused on promoting gender equality and respect across all community settings in Ballarat, aiming to create a cultural shift through comprehensive efforts in various sectors. Patty expressed concern over the rise of misogyny among younger men, fuelled by online influences, and stresses the importance of educating young people about healthy relationships. She underscores the need for community involvement and positive role models, while also highlighting the slow pace of change in the education system. The conversation concluded with a call to action for the community to actively contribute to creating a more equal and respectful society.
The Ballarat Women’s Fund is a giving circle model and empowers community members to work together and make a positive impact on gender inequality through collective giving.
