Ballarat Innovation Grant supports healthy school lunches for local children

February 22, 2026

The Ballarat Foundation is pleased to award the Ballarat Innovation Grant to Health Futures Australia to deliver the Ballarat Healthy Lunch Kitchen, a practical initiative focused on improving access to nutritious food for children attending priority schools across the Ballarat region.

The $100,000 grant, distributed over two years, will support the delivery of fresh, nutritious school lunches in 2026 and 2027. Currently at Phoenix Community College in Sebastopol, the program provides healthy, affordable meals made from local and seasonal produce, helping ensure children have the nourishment they need to learn and thrive.

Across Australia, families are navigating rising living costs and increasingly complex food environments. In this context, many children are not consistently accessing the nourishing meals required for healthy growth and learning. The Ballarat Healthy Lunch Kitchen is working to close that gap by providing meals rich in vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins at low or no cost.

The program extends beyond meal delivery. Holiday cooking programs will also be delivered for children and families, building lifelong food skills and encouraging healthy eating habits that continue beyond the classroom. At least 600 participants will take part in hands on sessions designed to increase confidence and familiarity with fresh ingredients.

At Phoenix Community College, the impact is already visible. Grade 5/6 teacher Andy Orton has observed students engaging with the full food cycle, from growing seedlings in the school garden through to preparing and enjoying healthy meals together.

“It’s been really cool,” Andy said. “The students have grown things from seedlings and then seen them end up on their plates. It’s been exciting watching them try foods they wouldn’t normally try, cooking vegetables and fruits they haven’t experienced before.”

He also noted a noticeable difference in the classroom after lunch.

“We’ve seen students who have eaten healthy food come back with more energy. They’re more engaged in the afternoon, which has been really impressive.”

The Ballarat Innovation Grant is designed to back bold, community led ideas that address disadvantage and create long term change. By supporting the Ballarat Healthy Lunch Kitchen, the Foundation is investing in a practical solution that strengthens health, learning and wellbeing for local children and families.

Congratulations to Health Futures Australia on leading this important work in our community.
