Over six glittering years, more than sixty incredible Stars have taken to the stage in Dancing with Our Stars, each stepping well outside their comfort zones for a cause bigger than themselves. Together, these local leaders, business people and community champions have helped raise more than $1 million to support the work of the Ballarat Foundation.
When the event launched in 2019, few could have imagined how successful it would become. Year after year, ten Stars have partnered with local dance instructors, committing months of practice to deliver spectacular performances on the big night.
Of course, none of these performances would be possible without the expertise and encouragement of Shelley Ross and the dedicated team of instructors at The Dance Studio. Year after year, they volunteer their time to train, coach and inspire our Stars, many of whom have never danced before. Their professionalism, patience and creativity bring the routines to life and help each Star shine on stage.
For some it has been about conquering nerves, for others about embracing the fun of learning to dance, but for all it has been about using their profile and networks to make a lasting impact in Ballarat.
When Dancing with Our Stars first launched at Civic Hall, the inaugural group of ten Stars weren’t quite sure what to expect. What followed was a spectacular night that set the tone for everything to come. Mark Nunn has been part of the journey from the very beginning, first as a dancer and in the years since as both a judge and the event’s auctioneer.
“I was fortunate to be involved in the very first event back in 2019 which, although daunting at the time, was incredibly rewarding, knowing we were contributing to those in our community who need support the most. The team at Buxton are proud to play a part in the fundraising efforts each year, with Dancing with our Stars now firmly established as a highlight on the Ballarat calendar that we all look forward to. We greatly value the tireless work the Ballarat Foundation undertakes across our community, and it is for this reason we feel it is so important to contribute in any way we can to support such an outstanding organisation.” Mark Nunn
The courage of every Star has made the event what it is today. While the sequins, spotlights and standing ovations are memorable, it is the fundraising that has left the greatest legacy. Each Star has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to rally donations, host events and share the Ballarat Foundation’s vision for a stronger, fairer community.
As 2022 Star, Ewen Fletcher shared, “I truly believe that a community is only as strong as its most vulnerable residents and this is why the work and existence of the Ballarat Foundation is critical to the success of Ballarat and its surrounds. It was a pleasure to be involved in Dancing with Our Stars.”
2024 Star, Kelly Bevan also described how much the experience meant to her. “Taking part in Dancing with Our Stars was an amazing experience on so many levels. Not only did I have the chance to raise funds and connect with the Ballarat community, but I also got to step way outside my comfort zone to learn the Viennese Waltz. The unexpected benefit was the lifelong friends I made with people I may not have crossed paths with otherwise. Ultimately, we all bonded over a shared commitment to making a real difference in our community.”
Reaching the $1 million milestone is a testament to the power of collective effort. No single year or individual could have achieved this alone. It has been built on the determination and generosity of all sixty Stars, their dance partners, sponsors and of course, the thousands of people who have bought tickets, cheered from the crowd and donated to the cause.
The funds raised through Dancing with Our Stars stay right here in Ballarat. They support programs that change lives; helping families in crisis, providing opportunities for young people, tackling disadvantage and building a connected, thriving community. This is the legacy that every Star has helped create.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we honour all who have been part of the journey so far. Dancing with Our Stars has proven that when our community comes together, even in sparkly outfits and dance shoes, we can achieve extraordinary things.
Here’s to the next chapter, the next cohort of Stars, and to continuing the legacy of making Ballarat a place where everyone can thrive. Because in the end, the real Star of the show is Ballarat itself.
The Ballarat Foundation acknowledges the Wadawurrung people, the traditional owners of the lands and waterways in our region. We recognise their diversity, resilience, and the ongoing place that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people hold in our communities. We pay our respects to the Elders, both past and present, and commit to working together in the spirit of mutual understanding, respect and reconciliation.
The Ballarat Foundation is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive community where everyone is welcomed, respected and empowered to thrive.
