In Golden Plains Shire, the Meredith Community Centre established the Meredith Mart in response to growing financial hardship, providing local access to essential food for families who would otherwise go without.
Before the program, there was no local food security service in the area. Families experiencing hardship often had to travel outside the shire for support, while others went without due to transport barriers or lack of access.
As cost of living pressures increased, including rising housing, utility and grocery costs, more families began to experience financial strain.
Through a Ballarat Foundation grant, the Meredith Mart has continued to provide a local, accessible food relief service, ensuring families can access essential groceries within their own community.
The impact has been immediate and far reaching. Families are experiencing relief from food insecurity, reduced financial pressure and greater ability to prioritise other essential expenses.
“Can’t begin to tell you how grateful we are. It’s going to make a huge difference to us over Christmas and the New Year.”
The program has also strengthened community connection, with volunteers and local organisations coming together to support those in need. What was once an invisible issue is now recognised and addressed through a coordinated, community led response.
This change matters because it ensures families can access support with dignity, close to home. It also builds stronger, more connected communities where people feel supported during times of hardship.
With continued support, programs like Meredith Mart can continue to respond to growing demand and provide essential food security for local families.
