Leveling the Playing Field

May 07, 2026

Removing Barriers to Participation - a grant through the Peter Amor Sports Participation Fund is helping remove financial barriers so people with intellectual disabilities can participate in sport, build confidence and feel connected.

For many people, sport is more than just a game. It provides connection, confidence and a sense of belonging.

In Ballarat, the Ballarat Bulldogs All Abilities Football program creates opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to play and compete in the sport they love.

However, the cost of participation can be a significant barrier. League fees, insurance and registration costs can make it difficult for some players and their families to afford to take part.

Without support, some players may miss out on the opportunity to be part of a team, connect with others and experience the benefits of being active. Others may go without essential items to cover the cost of fees.

Through a Ballarat Foundation grant from the Peter Amor Sports Participation Fund, these financial barriers have been reduced, making it easier for players to participate.

The impact is immediate. Players are more relaxed and confident, no longer carrying the stress of how to afford fees. More people are joining the program and participation is growing.

“I can’t believe the cost of fees, it’s so good.”

This change extends beyond the field. Players feel more connected, families and carers experience less financial pressure, and the sense of community within the club continues to strengthen.

Removing cost barriers allows players to focus on what matters, being part of a team, building confidence and enjoying the game.

With continued support, programs like this can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial circumstances.
