For some, there are limited spaces where they feel safe or included. Without early, accessible support, these experiences can impact mental health, wellbeing and future opportunities.
Meals for Change offers a simple but powerful solution. Young people can access a meal at a local café for just $3, creating a safe and welcoming way to step into community spaces, connect with others and build a sense of belonging.
Through a Ballarat Foundation grant, the program continues to provide this early intervention support, creating a welcoming and accessible entry point into the broader community and service system, including support for housing, mental health and financial wellbeing.
Since 2015, the program has supported more than 500 young people through over 18,000 meals across local cafés.
The impact is both immediate and long term. Young people are choosing to engage, with many self referring and continuing their involvement over time. Surveys show improvements in food security, increased feelings of belonging and a greater sense of being heard.
“Meals for Change has given me the confidence to talk to people and go back to school and also get a job.”
Beyond the meal itself, the program supports confidence, social connection and participation in everyday life. Many young people report feeling more motivated to leave the house, connect with others and take steps toward education or employment.
This change matters because it helps interrupt cycles of isolation and disadvantage early. By creating consistent, positive experiences of connection, programs like Meals for Change help young people build the relationships, confidence and stability they need for the future.
With continued support, this approach can continue to reach young people at risk of falling through the cracks and provide a pathway toward stronger wellbeing and connection.
