For many children, community sport is where confidence grows, friendships form and a sense of belonging begins.

In Ballarat, the VRI Delacombe Cricket Club supports junior players aged 7 to 16 from a diverse range of family backgrounds, including families experiencing cost of living pressures.

For some families, the cost of cricket equipment, particularly helmets and protective gear, can be a barrier to participation. Ageing and limited equipment also meant that players were often sharing gear that was not always the right fit, impacting both safety and confidence.

Through the Ballarat Foundation’s 2025 Community Impact Grants, the VRI Delacombe Cricket Club received funding from the Peter Amor Sports Participation Fund to upgrade its junior equipment, purchasing complete kits and modern helmets with neck protection.

All junior players now have access to properly fitted, safe equipment, creating a more inclusive and supportive environment. Confidence has increased, particularly among younger players, and training sessions are more efficient and enjoyable.

“The new equipment has made a noticeable difference for Bentley. He’s more confident at training and in matches, and as a parent I feel reassured knowing he’s protected with properly fitted gear.”

Families feel supported and reassured, while young players are able to focus on enjoying the game and building their skills.

This practical support removes barriers to participation and ensures more young people can stay connected to sport, build confidence and be part of their community.

With continued support, programs like this can continue to create safe, inclusive opportunities for young people across Ballarat.
